ISO7421ED Working Principle

The ISO7421ED digital isolators are designed to provide isolation between two power sources. It uses either optical or electrical coupling to achieve the desired isolation. When optical coupling is used, light-emitting diode (LED) and photodiode are utilized and the electrical isolation is created by the separation of the two elements. On the other hand, electrical coupling utilizes transformer as the isolation barrier. Actually there are only a few models of ISO7421ED using electrical coupling, due to its high production costs and large size. However, it can provide higher isolation voltage and more reliable performance.

The LED in optical coupled ISO7421ED is driven by the input voltage, which turns electrical signals into optical signals. Then the optical signals are transmitted to the receiving side via an optical fiber. Finally, the photodiode converts the optical signals back to electrical signals to the output. The electrical coupling ISO7421ED also relies on the transformer to provide isolation, while it has more parameters such as input voltage, output voltage and maximum current.

Usually, the ISO7421ED digital isolators have good common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), which can reduce noise to a certain extent. It also has great temperature performance, high reliability and good voltage isolation.
