Digital Isolators

Digital Isolation is a concept used in electrical engineering to prevent electrical disturbances from damaging sensitive components or systems. Digital isolator systems have been designed to control the flow of power, data, and communication signals between two circuits or devices isolated from each other. Digital isolators use a variety of isolation methods including opto - isolated, magnetically - coupled, and Circuit - Breaker - based, each with its own particular characteristics and advantages. One example of digital isolators is the ISO7720DW, which is an electro-optic isolator designed to interface between two digital circuits with no direct electrical coupling. It is designed for use in medical, industrial, and automotive applications where guaranteed digital isolation is needed to prevent circuit malfunction and damage to sensitive components or systems. The ISO7720DW uses a self-biasing transformers current transfer ratio (CTR) to send data without direct electrical coupling between the two circuits. In the ISO7720DW, two opto-isolators are used to provide a galvanic isolation barrier between the primary and secondary circuits. The opto-isolators in the ISO7720DW use a light-sensitive photodetector and an LED (light-emitting diode) to transmit the data without direct electrical contact between the circuits.The ISO7720DW has two isolated channels for data transmission. The sending node encodes the data into an optical PWM (pulse-width modulation) signal. The data is then transmitted to the receiving node through a fiber –optic cable. The PWM signal is then decoded by the receiving node and the data is transferred from the sending node to the receiving node.The ISO7720DW is a high-speed digital isolator with a data acquisition rate of up to 400kbps (kilobits per second). It also features EMI/RFI noise rejection and low levels of EMI/ RFI emissions. The isolation stand-off voltage is 8.5kV and the isolation stability tested up to 64 times. The supply voltage required for the ISO7720DW is 4-16Vdc and the power consumption is 0.36W.The ISO7720DW is a cost-effective, reliable isolation solution for applications requiring high-voltage isolation. It has been designed and tested to meet the requirements of medical, industrial, and automotive applications, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
