ISO7721DR Application Field and Working Principle

ISO7721DR is a 3.3V digital isolator chip specifically designed to provide high-speed communication between two systems by using optical semiconductor isolation technology. It is also able to provide up to 2A power transfer and up to 2 Mbps data transmission rates. The ISO7721DR chip uses a bidirectional cmos circuit composed of a photovoltaic coupler and transistors. The photovoltaic coupler consists of a light-emitting diode (LED) and a photodetector. This converts the electrical input into optical input, and then creates a voltage signal between the output and input pins of the chip. This voltage signal can then be used by the output circuits to control its operation.

The chip also has several protection features such as Over-Voltage protection (OVP) and Reverse Current protection (RCP). OVP helps prevent damage to the chip due to high voltage input. RCP prevents damage due to reverse current which could otherwise occur in the case of an open-loop circuit.
