ITR9803 Application Field and Working Principle

The ITR9803 is a type of optical sensor called a photointerrupter, belonging to the slot type family and featuring transistor output. This optical sensor can detect signals from its leading or trailing edge, and features a high sensing distance, high resistant to ambient light, wide temperature range, and a fast response time, allowing for the sensing of position, gaps, or rotation in a variety of industrial and consumer applications.

Application Field

The ITR9803 slot-type photointerrupter is designed to be used in a range of industrial and consumer applications, including home appliances, motor speed control, office machines, transports, electronic musical instruments, copiers, electronic games, entertainment systems, and telecommunication devices.

This optical sensor is designed to detect position, movements, gaps, and rotation, and is suitable for use in linear and rotary encoders, paper feeders, drum level detectors, floppy drive applications, write-protect switches, and more.

Working Principle

The ITR9803 is composed of an infrared photo transmitter and receiver housed in plastic mouldings. The critical parts of the photointerrupter, transmitter and receiver, are mounted opposite, facing each other across an air gap. When this gap is interrupted, the transmitter emits infrared light and the receiver detects this communication, sending a logic signal output.

The ITR9803 features low output circuit resistance, fast response, high reliability, and a wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C. The clamping diode built-in can eliminate interference signals backed from an inductive load. The device also features enhanced safety functions, and high radiation of light resistance, allowing it to be used for sensing applications in bright places.
