DC-DC Converters: IV1215S Application Field and Working Principle

A DC-DC converter is an electronic device used to convert one DC voltage level to another. Among the various types of DC-DC converters, the IV1215S is a type of high frequency buck converter that is designed to supply current up to 1500W with an input DC voltage range of 18-36V and an output voltage of 12V.

The IV1215S has two primary application fields: automotive and industrial. In the automotive field, the IV1215S is used in accessory power components such as power supplies, battery chargers, adaptors and fuel cells. In the industrial field, the IV1215S is widely used in distributed energy systems, renewable energy applications, motor drives and power supplies.

The following describes the working of the IV1215S converter. The IV1215S converter consists of an electrolytic capacitor, a power MOSFET, and an inductor. The primary input voltage is applied to the capacitor through a parallel circuit. The current entering the capacitor is then divided between the inductor and the MOSFET. The MOSFET is used as a switch to control the output voltage while the inductor is used to store and release energy.

The current entering the inductor energizes a magnetic field which in turn generates a back EMF voltage. This voltage opposes the input voltage, thus anchoring the inductor current at the input voltage. The MOSFET then controls the inductor current and thus the output voltage. When the MOSFET is switched on, the voltage at the output terminal is equal to the input voltage minus the voltage generated by the back EMF. The MOSFET is then switched off, allowing the inductor current to decline and storing energy in the magnetic field.

When the MOSFET is switched off, the back EMF voltage increases, thus reducing the output voltage. This process is repeatedly cycled, controlling the output voltage while storing energy in the inductor. The current and voltage at the output terminals are regulated by adjusting the pulse width of the MOSFET.

This type of DC-DC converter offers impressive performance, boasting high efficiency, low power dissipation and fast transient response. It is a cost-effective solution for multiple power applications and is highly reliable for automotive and industrial usages.
