LED Lighting - COBs, Engines, Modules

The increasingly widespread use of LED lighting has been greatly helped by the development of new components and systems designed specifically for the task. Among these are total self-contained systems, known as CoBs, Engines and Modules. Each has its own characteristics and uses that make it suitable for different lighting applications.

COBs

COBs (or Chip-on-Board LEDs) are complete lighting systems comprising a compact package containing multiple LED chips mounted on a printed circuit board. This gives a high power-to-volume ratio and as such, COBs are well-suited for applications where a high intensity of lighting is required in a small space. Because the chips are highly integrated, the system provides excellent thermal resistance, meaning that no extra cooling is necessary in many applications.As well as standard COBs which are suitable for a wide variety of lighting applications, there are also models that have been specifically designed for outdoor use (IP-rated etc.). These are more resistant to extremes of weather and temperature, allowing them to be used in less-than-ideal conditions.COBs can also be used to power LED strips and provide the flexibility to control the degree of brightness and colour of the installed LED strips.Common uses of COBs include commercial lighting, architectural lighting and automotive lighting.

Engines

Engines are similar to COBs in many respects, but consist of smaller and more densely packed individual LED chips which, when brought together, are capable of producing higher intensity lighting than COBs. Engines are suitable for high power applications, particularly in the field of display and projection lighting, such as stage and auditorium lighting, digital signage, projectors, and TV and theatrical backdrops.Engines are better suited than COBs for powering long-run lighting strips, as they are less prone to power drops as the strip becomes longer. This makes them ideal for installations in large spaces such as exhibition halls and auditoriums.

Modules

Modules are a form of COB in which the chip is mounted on a substrate, rather than a printed circuit board. This gives the module an even higher power-to-volume ratio, making them extremely compact. Like the COB, the module is suitable for applications that require a high intensity of lighting in a small space, particularly those where a high degree of thermal resistance is needed.
