The JTL4048S3V3 DC DC converter provides a regulated 3.3V output voltage from an input voltage range of 4 to 40V. It employs a synchronous rectification step-down or buck switching regulator topology with an internal high-frequency switching current mode pulse-width-modulated (PWM) control. The input voltage is applied to the converter, then rectified with two pairs of Schottky diodes D1 and D2. However, one of the diodes is paralleled with the high-side switch (SW1) to improve the system efficiency. Then, the voltage is further reduced to a preset voltage by the internal control and buck switching loop of the converter.

The PWM control circuit, composed of Pulse-width Modulator IC1 and current sensing resistor R2, measures the current through the inductor L1. As current is increasing, pulse width is decreases and the output voltage is regulated to the set value. The output voltage is the sum of the schottky diode voltage dropped between input and output, and the voltage of inductor reactance between input and output. The output is then filtered by the output capacitor C2 to improve the ripple voltage.

The converter has several protection features, such as overload, short circuit, over-temperature and over voltage protection. These features are all enabled through the integrated circuit (IC1). Overload protection is enabled by the OCP circuit. The short circuit protection cuts off the output when the switch of the converter is off. The over-temperature protection is implemented by monitoring the junction temperature of the IC1. For the over voltage protection, only a certain voltage higher than the rated voltage is allowed, and the output is disabled when the voltage exceeds the limit.
