Reed relays are electromechanical switches that are controlled by an electromagnet. They are commonly used for switching circuits, on/off, in/out, or other control functions. The name “reed relay” comes from the fact that the switch is actuated by a thin metal reed that moves when an external magnetic field is applied.The JWD-172-161 reed relay, manufactured by JWD Controls, is a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) switch designed for telecommunications switching applications. It has 2 sets of reed contacts: one set of normally-open (NO) contacts, and one set of normally-closed (NC) contacts. The switch is capable of switching up to 10A at 125VAC, or 3A at 250VAC. It has a current carry-forward rating of 0.8A at 10VAC, and a low-power carry- forward rating of 0.2A at 5VAC.The JWD-172-161 can be actuated using either a small electrical pulse or a permanent magnet. It has a maximum release current of 20mA, with a minimum ON-state voltage of 0.8V. It has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.When actuated, a current is applied to the relay coil, which creates an electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field creates an attraction between the reed switch and the armature, causing the switch to close. When the current is removed from the coil, the armature and the switch return to their original positions.
