When surge protection components such as fuselinks are used, selecting the correct type and rating is critical to ensure that not only is the equipment being protected but also that the fuselink performs in an expected manner.The KLDR009.TXP range of fuselinks from D.E.C. Electronics, are specifically designed for the protection of DC systems, and are available in two different configurations; the standard version and the reverse polarity version. The standard version of the KLDR009 series is a DC fuse, suitable for manual or automatic reset operation. It is designed to protect DC equipment from fatal current surges, when exposed to sudden power or voltage surges, by disconnecting the equipment before the current levels become too high. The reverse polarity version is designed for equipment with undesirable wiring connections which have positive and negative polarity reversed.The KLDR009.TXP fuselinks are available in a range of current ratings from 10 to 35A, with the reverse polarity version also available in ratings up to 70A. The max operating voltage of these units is 24Vdc, and they are available with both standard and high-temperature contacts for use in applications where the ambient temperature is particularly high.The KLDR009 fuselinks are compliant to the UL 94V-0 flammability standard, for a variety of equipment protection applications, and are RoHS compliant. The fuselinks are available in either sealed or unsealed versions.The working principle of the KLDR009 series is reasonably straightforward. When a current exceeding the fuse\'s rating passes through the link, it will melt away, cutting off the power to the load which is being protected. The fuse will only detect the instantaneous currents, such as short-circuits and overloads, that would cause serious damage to the equipment and circuit. It also features a "trip-free" operation, which means that if the fuse is overloaded, it can be reset without having to replace the fuse. The KLDR009 series also provide a "failsafe" operation, thanks to their use of a bimetal construction and a wax plug to supplement the heat of the current and melt it away. This means that the fuse is able to "trip" more quickly and reliably than other types of fuse.
