KSZ8021RNL

The KSZ8021RNL is an integrated physical layer transceiver designed to transmit and receive Ethernet data over standard Cat 5 UTP cable. The device operates at speeds up to 20 Mbps and supports 10Base-T and 100Base-TX/FX physical layer specifications.

The device allows for half-duplex or full-duplex transmission over a single 2-pair cable. The controller includes physical interface, clock and data recovery, auto-negotiating functionality and low-power mode operation. The device also has transmit and receive data FIFOs for buffering data in half-duplex operation.

The KSZ8021RNL provides an interface between the media access controller (MAC) and the physical medium of an Ethernet. The physical layer transceiver contains the necessary drivers and receivers to transmit and receive data to and from the Ethernet medium. It is capable of operating at 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps data rates, and supports full-duplex flow control at 10 Mbps, half-duplex flow control at 100 Mbps and full-duplex flow control at 100 Mbps. It also has a Media Independent Interface (MII) which provides a parallel bus interface to the MAC.

The device provides signal conditioning functions necessary to interface to the Ethernet medium. The signal conditioning functionality includes signal conditioning on transmit data, clock and data signal decoding on receive data, clock signal regeneration and auto-negotiation of link speed and duplex. In addition, the device provides an optional SMI internal PHY clock output signal for connection to the MAC interface on the higher layer cards.

The KSZ8021RNL implements the single-channel medium access control protocol. The control protocol is responsible for negotiating link speed and full/half-duplex settings, loop-back, overrun, corruption and framing errors. It also oversees auto-negotiation, link status monitoring and MII management. The device includes an interrupt controller for handling link change information, auto-negotiation complete, and error interrupts, which is linked to the MAC.

The KSZ8021RNL supports various low power modes to save power when the device is not in use. These include Power Down, Network Sleep and Auto-Negotiation Sleep modes. The device also contains two nodes which can be configured as a master or slave node to support remote loop-back testing, and a copper cable test. The device is compliant with the 10/100BASE-T1 Ethernet physical layer standards.
