Features
The KSZ8381Q is a multi-protocol transceiver, providing support for Ethernet, ATM and SONET communications standards. It also supports Wake-on-LAN (WoL) for remote wake-up of powered-down systems. The KSZ8381Q also supports low-power operation, with a maximum power consumption of less than half a watt. This is done by utilizing a new digital power control circuit, which ensures efficient use of the available power. The integrated regulator on the silicon rids the need for an external regulator, thus saving cost and space, while providing a high level of accuracy. The transceiver is compliant with the IEEE 1588 standard, and provides precise time-stamping suitable for synchronizing network elements in network time-based applications, such as VoIP and video streaming. The device also supports industry-standard management protocols such as SNMP, Netflow, IGMP and HTTP, making it easy to integrate with existing network management systems.Working Principle
The KSZ8381Q acts as an interface between the host system and physical media, converting the data into analog signals and transmitting them over the wire. The transceiver receives Gigabit Ethernet frames from the host system, and processes them based on the protocol used. It then encodes the data into symbols, using signal encoding schemes such as 8B/10B or 64B/66B. These symbols are then converted to differential signals, which are transmitted over the media. At the other end, the differential signals are received by another transceiver. The received signal is decoded into digital data, and the frame is re-constructed. The frame is then verified and processed, before being passed back to the host system.Aside from transmitting and receiving data frames, the transceiver also performs a number of other functions. It monitors the link status, and can detect collisions, link errors, and network management messages. It can also monitor packet loss and packet quality, and detect transmission errors. The transceiver supports various management features, such as port control and security. It can also support switching protocols such as IGMP and IP forwarding.
