The KSZ8873MLL-EVAL is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit designed for faster and easier evaluation and development using the KSZ8873MLL 3-port managed Ethernet switch device. This board and kit supports a wide range of functions and evaluation of different development and evaluation cycle stages. The onboard application includes, but not limited to the following.

The KSZ8873MLL-EVAL is a powerful Ethernet switch evaluation board measuring 28.6 by 99.1 mm. It is equipped with a RJ-45 connector at each port for interfacing the device to a 10/100 Mbps network. The physical layer consists of an MII/RMII interface for the COM port, and a build-in PHY for each of the two other ports. The board is further supported by an integrated EEPROM, programmable I/O interface, and programmable LED indicators.

Furthermore, the KSZ8873MLL-EVAL application field offers a superior level of flexibility in the design in terms of the operating protocols, quick migration and offer an economical solution to most of the specific application needs. By configuring the EEPROM, the user can set up various operating states like port mirroring, protection, port VLAN operation, etc.

The KSZ8873MLL-EVAL also provides support to the development of networking related products in order to make them more cost-effective with higher throughput. It supports high-speed Ethernet communications, and also provides segmentation and error free operation using layer 2 switching functions.

The working principle of the KSZ8873MLL-EVAL is based on the KSZ8873MLL 3-port Ethernet switch device. This device is a 1.25Gbps Ethernet switch, supporting the MII/RMII interface and also a programmable LED indicators. The device contains two integrated Media Access Control (MAC) connections and an integrated Physical Layer (PHY). The MAC enables the device to handle all inbound and outbound Ethernet traffic and the PHY provides the physical layer functions such as signal encoding and decoding.

The device provides an efficient solution for Layer 2 switching, segmentation, and error free operation, allowing the network to function at higher speeds while also providing Ethernet soft switching capabilities. Additionally, it provides port mirroring features, data path protection, VLAN support and multiple packet forwarding modes. It also provides support for QoS routing, priority queuing, and tag-based filtering.

To complement the evaluation needs of the KSZ8873MLL-EVAL, the evaluation board is equipped with an on-board processor designed to control certain board features. By connecting this processor to the MII/RMII interface, the board can be used to programmably set up various networking related functions, such as port mirroring, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), or protection. The processor can also be used to authenticate users and offer additional network security.
