KTS-R-60 is an advanced thermoacoustic power generator developed by Qinghai Institute, which is primarily used in a variety of remote locations to produce electrical energy. The device is driven by a mechanical power source such as a diesel engine or a petrol engine. The KTS-R-60 consists of three components: a regenerator, a stack, and a resonator. The regenerator consists of two metal plates filled with material that can absorb heat, such as a polymer foam. The two metal plates come into contact with each other during the working process. Heat is pumped back and forth between the two metal plates. The heat from the hot plate is absorbed by the material between the metal plates, then transferred to the cold plate.

The stacks sit between the regenerator and the resonator. They function as a gate between the two, pushed and pulled as sound waves enter them. The sound waves are generated in the resonator which is like a small acoustic chamber. The resonator is located at the center of the device and is made of an elastic material. This material vibrates at certain frequencies when sound waves enter it, resulting in the creation of pressure cycles.

When the hot and cold plates of the regenerator are brought into contact with each other, a cycle begins. Heat is absorbed from the hot plate, transferred to the cold plate and then pushed back. The process creates a pressure wave that is passed through the stack. This pressure wave is converted into a small oscillating motion. This motion is passed back to the resonator, where it is amplified and creates a standing wave, resulting in an acoustic pressure cycle that is greater than the cycling pressure created by the heat exchange.

The pressure cycle is then used to push and pull the attached mechanical device. This process is repeated, collecting and releasing energy in a cycle and producing electrical power. The collected energy is stored in batteries or used directly for applications such as residential lighting, small farm systems, or portable electronic devices.
