The L296P is an integrated monolithic DC to DC switching regulator. This regulator was designed to allow power conversion from 5V to 7V or 12V outputs with high efficiency, without the need for a heatsink. Its features include the ability to regulate power flow in both directions, to produce output voltage levels that are higher than the input voltage, and to directly drive LEDs with up to 1.4A current (without additional power components).

Working Principle

The L296P is a monolithic monolithic synchronous buck voltage regulator comprised of two N-Channel MOSFET switches, a power low side switch and a passive switch comprised of a Schottky diode. The two N-channel MOSFET switches are connected in series to form a continuous loop (antiparallel) as the "arm" of the device, with the Schottky diode providing the constant low resistance connection. The power low side switch provides the positive voltage for the output required for the manufacture of the switch-mode power supply.

When the circuit is enabled and the input voltage is applied, the control circuitry sets the duty cycle of the MOSFET switches, thereby allowing the current to flow from the input voltage source and through the low side switch to transform the received energy to the output. The Schottky diode maintains a low resistance passage for current flow, allowing for efficient power transfer with minimal power losses, making this a highly efficient voltage regulator. The pruned duty cycle of the MOSFET switches allows for adjustable output voltage and current, hence enabling the output voltage to remain stable even under different input voltage conditions.

In the case of the L296P, the output voltage is tightly regulated over wide input voltage ranges, with the ripple and noise levels remaining within the manufacturer\'s specified limits.
