IntroductionLithium ion batteries have been increasingly popular in many mobile, automotive, and medical applications for some time now. However, as this type of battery chemistry matures, the sensitive and high-end applications that demand levels of power conversion and regulation have begun to look to new, more efficient, and innovative approaches. Enter the L4953G, a Voltage Regulator IC designed for special purpose applications with high levels of power conversion. Developed by STMicroelectronics, the L4953G is built around a Buck-Boost switching regulator design, making it an ideal solution for a variety of applications requiring a highly accurate, reliable, and efficient regulator. Application FieldThe L4953G is a monolithic Step Down/Step Up regulator DC-DC converter circuit, ideal for applications which require a high power conversion rate. It is most commonly used in mobile phones, tablets, and cameras, where it is used to provide a regulated supply to a variety of circuits, such as a main processor, display, and touch screen. In automotive applications, its efficiency and noise reduction ability make it ideal for economically powering the on-board computer systems or navigation systems. Its performance characteristics are such that it can also be deployed in a variety of medical and industrial applications, such as medical instrumentation systems and factory automation. Furthermore, due to its small size and its ability to withstand harsh environments, the L4953G is suitable for use in low- to mid-power applications in remote and/or on-site installations. Working PrincipleAt its heart, the L4953G is a Buck-Boost switching regulator, taking its power from an input voltage, before regulating and outputting the required voltage and current levels. The device consists of two high-voltage switch FETs and two low-voltage switch FETs, all of which operate at high switching frequencies via a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. This signal is generated by an internal analogue charge pump, which controls the FET switching. The L4953G can be used either in Step Down, Step Up or Step Up/Down configurations, depending on the application. In Step Down mode, the input voltage is converted to the output voltage by switching between the FETs at a high frequency, with the varying signal controlling the flow of current. In Step Up mode, the input voltage is converted to the output voltage by using both the FETs in parallel, with the varying signal controlling the flow of current. Finally, in Step Up/Down mode, the input voltage is taken and either stepped up or down as required, depending on the output voltage set.The L4953G provides built-in protection against undervoltage, overvoltage, overtemperature and short-circuit events, with an adjustable soft-start function. The device also features a selectable power-good monitor with an internal delay time and an watchdog timer with a minimum pulse width setting, both of which help ensure reliability and accuracy.
