The L6205N, designed by STMicroelectronics, is a highly efficient dual full bridge driver designed to drive medium and high power motors. The L6205N is build around the company’s NanoFree technology and is specialized for high power applications. The device contains efficient low voltage drivers and a high operating temperature range. The powerful control circuitry allows for fast, stable operation at clock frequencies up to 500 kHz and torque resolution down to 0.1%.
The L6205N has an integrated 125mA low-dropout regulator which also has voltage regulators for each bridge driver. This integrated regulator improves system performance and eliminates the need for external components or extra power supply.The output current limit is adjustable and can be programmed up to 2A. The dynamic dead time control and temperature protection mechanisms help the L6205N to improve system efficiency and reduce total power dissipation.
The L6205N operates as an H-bridge, employing two N-channel MOSFETs (or one N-channel and one P-channel MOSFET) at each end of the motor winding. When both transistors conduct at the same time, a current flows in the motor winding, generating torque and driving the motor. When the transistors alternate – first one conducting, then the other – the current reverses direction, producing the push-pull cycle required for motor control.
The L6205N supports a 3-phase sinusoidal mode, a 6-step regular mode, and a 6-step square-wave mode of operation. In addition, the device includes optional stall detection and peak current detection, as well as a low-noise PWM mode of operation. When enabled, the stall detection feature allows for the recognition of any motor stall condition, helping to minimize system losses. When peak current detection is enabled, the L6205N can automatically adjust the motor current to an optimum level, enhancing motor efficiency and minimizing unnecessary power consumption.
