The LB11697V-TLM-E is a pulse-width modulation (PWM) motor driver Controller IC. It is specifically designed for controlling the speed and direction of small- to medium-sized brushless DC motors. This IC incorporates two independent PWM motor drivers, as well as a variety of system functions. The LB11697V-TLM-E is a member of ROHM’s TLM series of motor driver controllers, and is targeted primarily for traction and robot applications.

Block Diagram

The LB11697V-TLM-E includes two independent PWM drivers, as well as several system control and protection functions. The first PWM driver is a 12-bit, rail-to-rail type PWM voltage driver, which provides motor control. The PWM frequency is adjustable from 1KHz to 3.2KHz by setting a resistor or capacitor externally.The other PWM driver features a three-phase output that produces a 16-bit pulse-width modulation waveform using the speed input pulse waveform. The pulse waveform input is used to sense the motor speed.

Protection Features

Along with the two PWM drivers, the LB11697V-TLM-E also includes several system protection features. These include an overcurrent protection circuit, a low voltage lock and a smoothing/filtering function.The overcurrent protection circuit monitors the motor current by sensing a voltage drop across a resistor connected in series with the motor. When the current exceeds the voltage drop, the overcurrent protection circuit will shut off the power to the motor, protecting the IC from damage.The low voltage lock monitors the power supply voltage and shuts off the power to the motor when the power supply voltage falls below a certain threshold. This helps protect the motor from damage due to undervoltage conditions.Finally, the smoothing/filtering function smooths and filters the PWM pulse waveform, further protecting the motor from damage due to voltage variations.

Working Principle

The working principle of the LB11697V-TLM-E is simple and straightforward. The IC includes two independent PWM drivers, a power supply voltage monitoring circuit, and overcurrent and smoothing/filtering circuits.The 12-bit PWM driver provides the motor driving voltage, while the pulse waveform input can sense the speed of the motor.
