Motion Sensors are used in a myriad of applications to bring into play sensing capabilities. Accelerometers, in particular, are widely used to detect acceleration, direction, and angle of devices. LIS302DLHTR is a three-axis MEMS accelerometer, from STMicroelectronics, which is used as inertial sensing system in various applications.LIS302DLHTR is built on a dedicated CMOS process with a micro-machined sensing element. It uses a tray structure for bending-proof and reliable operation for industrial applications. This accelerometer is particularly advantageous for its low power consumption and wide operating temperature range. It has a supply voltage range of 1.62V to 3.6V. It is suitable for industrial protections and process control due to its high tolerance to vibration and acceleration.The accelerometer can measure acceleration in three axes (X, Y and Z) simultaneously. It has a self-test function which can be used to check the device\'s reliability and integrity. The accelerometer combines linear acceleration measurement, shock detection, tilt sensing and tap recognition features. The accelerometer is calibrated for full-scale range and bias through external circuitry.The accelerometer uses a Wheatstone bridge, consisting of 4 capacitors and 4 strain gauges, to measure acceleration. Basically, when the accelerometer experiences acceleration, the bridge output voltage will change. This change is detected and converted to acceleration measurement by the on-chip signal conditioning circuitry. When acceleration increases in one direction, the bridge resistance increases and vice versa. The acceleration is thus calculated from the bridge resistance.LIS302DLHTR allows full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±8g or ±16g, with selectable High Pass filter with a range from 0.02Hz to 3277Hz. The accelerometer also includes internal motion detection algorithms that enable the detection of significant motion changes such as those associated with human movement. It uses a SPI or IIC interface to communicate with the external controller. The data rate can be set from 1.5Hz to 12.5KHz, and the signal is digitized at 10-bit resolution.LIS302DLHTR is commonly used in applications such as mechanical integrity and monitoring systems, articular monitoring and movement recognition based applications, gaming peripherals and augmented reality, industrial measurement and controls, robotics, consumer products, vibrational and pathological studies of human locomotion, etc. It is also widely used in automotive systems, medical devices, handheld devices, fitness and sports, safe guard and protection systems, aeronautic movies, etc. The LIS302DLHTR is a valuable addition to the world of motion sensors due its robust design, multiple features and wide range of applications.
