LIS331ALTR accelerometer is an application field of motion sensors. It is a type of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) device that is efficient in measuring the acceleration forces and angular rates along with inclination. LIS331ALTR is composed of one sensing block and one part block for signal conditioning. Furthermore, these blocks are connected with mechanical structures to form a single integrated MEMS device.
To understand the application fields of LIS331ALTR accelerometer, one needs to understand the working principles. The device measures linear acceleration (the change of dynamic velocity) in three dimensions: X, Y, and Z, with the help of three sensing elements in the sensing section. The sensing section consists of a piezoresistive MEMS element combined with thermal and mechanical sensor elements acting in synergy to record both dynamic and static acceleration in the environment.
When the mounting base is subjected to any type of continuous linear acceleration, the sensing section deflects, and due to the structural design of the MEMS element, it creates strain fields, which further causes bending of the sensing membrane. The change in the strain field can be measured by a high resistance Wheatstone bridge, consisting of four piezoresistors. The strain signal created by the MEMS element is fed to microelectronic components for further amplification and conditioning.
The level of signal conditioning depends on the application in which the accelerometer is employed. An amplitude is usually chosen for filtering; however, some applications require greater amplitude limits. The accelerometer can also be used to measure inclination and rotation rate. This is done by applying two axes, at right angles, to produce a combined signal that is analyzed in order to determine the direction of the accelerometer.
The MEMS accelerometer is often used in the automotive industry, robotics, industrial machines, and other vibration sensitive applications for measuring of velocity or impact display. It is also suitable in medical instruments such as stretchers and wheelchairs, activity trackers, control systems, etc. These accelerometers can be used in various applications which can be customized according to the requirements.
The LIS331ALTR accelerometer is a versatile motion sensing device. Its application fields vary from one system to another and one field of application to another.
