LM393N is a dual general-purpose comparator device and it is categorized under Linear - Comparators. It has two independent, high gain, internally frequency compensated operational amplifiers that share one common mode, power supply rail and output flag. This device can be employed to compare two voltage signals, continuously monitor control signals and act as phase detectors.

The LM393N has two useful modes: open loop dual comparator mode and differential amplifier mode. In open loop dual comparator mode, the LM393N can be used for basic logic functions and the outputs of the two comparators can be combined to act as an AND gate, OR gate and NOT gate. In differential amplifier mode, the LM393N can be used for waveform comparing, waveform shaping and waveform conditioning. It can also be used for pulse shaping and waveform comparison for other analog signals.

In terms of the physical package, the LM393N uses a small plastic surface-mounting package, which consists of eight pins. It is designed in a very compact form that can make it suitable for space-constrained applications. So, the LM393N is widely used in variety of applications related to industrial control, laboratory instrumentation and many electronic circuits.

The working principle of the LM393N is simple. The two comparators of the LM393N take two input signals and compare their absolute values. If one of the signals is higher than the other in terms of absolute value, the output of the device will be Logic “1”. Similarly, if the second input signal is higher than the first input signal in terms of absolute value, the output will be Logic “0”. The output flag of the LM393N can be switched on by applying appropriate logic signals to the input terminals. This switch-on voltage can be adjusted using the trimmer provided on the LM393N.
