The LMZ14203EXTEVAL/NOPB evaluation board is designed to demonstrate the performance of the LMZ14203 synchronous buck-boost converter, a high current, high efficiency, low power, low noise, adjustable step-up/down/inverting switching regulator. This circuit is ideal for automotive, industrial, portable power and consumer applications. The board utilises the 24-pin HTSSOP package of the LMZ14203 and an external inductor. It is designed to support an input voltage range of 6 V to 30 V, an output voltage range of 2.7 V to 24 V and an adjustable output current up to 8 A.

The evaluation board is extremely flexible; the LMZ14203 is configured for either a buck, boost or inverse buck-boost converter applications. The inductor, output capacitors and the current sense resistor are chosen to handle 8 A current and support the required VOUT and ripple. The board integrates an enable function and a PGOOD pin for easy connection to user systems, and power sequencing of multiple LDOs.

The LMZ14203 synchronous buck-boost converter working principle is very simple. In buck mode, input voltage is above the output voltage so the switching device conducts current through the inductor output capacitor. As the switch turns off, the current must continue to flow, so the inductor current is stored in the output capacitor. When the switch turns on, current flows through the inductor in the opposite direction, causing the output voltage to rise.

For boost mode, the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, so the switch turns off and the stored energy in the inductor is dumped into the output capacitor, raising the output voltage. In the inverse buck-boost mode, the input voltage is opposite to the output, meaning the switch turns on and off to maintain a constant voltage regulation.

The IC’s control loop features level shifter and low noise error amplifier. The clock generator provides a constant frequency (360 kHz) while the control loop will adjust the duty cycle to reach the desired output voltage. Furthermore, the IC includes a thermal protection circuit that will turn off the switcher, preventing catastrophic damage. Furthermore, two auxiliary outputs include adjustable OVP, adjustable reverse current protection and adjustable low Quiescent current in standby mode.
