Application field

The LP143F23IET crystal oscillator is ideal for use in critical applications for system time bases and clocks in a variety of electronic systems including automotive, medical, industrial control and automation, instrumentation and telecom products. It is also well suited for microprocessor and microcontroller applications, such as PC motherboards, gaming consoles, cell phones, MP3 players and digital cameras.

Working principle

Crystal oscillators employ a quartz crystal as their resonating element, which acts as a resonator. The quartz crystal is housed inside of a metal can and is used to produce a precise frequency. This frequency is determined by the cut of the quartz crystal and its size. The quartz crystal is also an efficient transducer, converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice-versa.In the circuit, the crystal is connected between two terminals of a parallel resonant circuit, usually an LC network. The series resonance frequency of the LC network is adjusted so that it equals the frequency of the vibration mode of the quartz crystal. This type of circuit is known as a Pierce oscillator.The voltage excitation of the quartz crystal provides a mechanical vibration due to the energy input from the Pierce oscillator circuit, which drives the crystal’s natural frequency. The crystal then vibrates at its natural frequency. The frequency of the vibration mode will remain constant until the pointing direction of the crystal is changed or the vibration amplitude is changed.The oscillating quartz crystal produces an electrical voltage output at its terminals which can be amplified and rectified to produce a pulse. The pulse frequency determines the frequency of the output oscillator.

The device is designed to provide low power stability, while still providing excellent performance. Also, the device is fast switching, having excellent start-up performance under different operating temperatures.
