Working Principle of LP2966IMM-1830/NOPB

The LP2966IMM-1830/NOPB 9V Linear Voltage Regulator operates by utilizing a distributed feedback error amplifier stage and a low quiescent current PNP series pass transistor. The amplifier stage has a very high gain which makes possible the very low-dropout voltage of the device, as well as its very high accuracy output over temperature and line. The amplifier computes the difference between the reference voltage and the output voltage, and adjusts the voltage across the series pass transistor in order to maintain the correct output voltage.

The series pass transistor is integrated into the IC, and works to regulate the output voltage by controlling the current from the input to the output. The current out of the series pass transistor is determined by the voltage across the transistor, which is in turn determined by the control from the error amplifier. As the output voltage changes, either due to a change in the input voltage or a change in the load, the error amplifier will continuously adjust the output voltage back to the correct voltage set point.
