Structure and Working Principle

The LP2989AIM-1.8 is a monolithic 8-pin Vertical Small Outline No-lead (VSON) IC, as shown in Figure 1.

In Figure 1, the pins from 1 to 5 are input stages, pins 6 and 7 are output stages, and pin 8 is a ground.

The input stage is an error amplifier with an internal 1.25V reference voltage (VREF) as shown in Figure 2. This reference voltage is connected to the inverting input of the error amplifier and the output voltage (Vout) is connected to the non-inverting input of the error amplifier.

The LP2989AIM-1.8 also has a PFM/PWM (Pulse Frequency Modulation/Pulse Width Modulation) control system. When the output voltage Vout is below the reference voltage VREF, the internal comparator will be in the HIGH Vout and LOW Vout condition. If the voltage is lower, the internal comparator will be in the Low Vout condition, and the Low-side MOSFET will be "ON", and the output voltage will decrease. If the voltage is higher, the internal comparator will be in the High Vout condition, and the Low-side MOSFET will "OFF", and the output voltage will increase.

This PFM/PWM control system operates with a high switching frequency of 1MHz and a low-side MOSFET gate controlled by the PWM/PFM, so the LP2989AIM-1.8 can achieve fast transient response. The LP2989AIM-1.8 has current and temperature protection: During normal operation, the current limit protects the IC and if the temperature is too high, the thermal shutdown protection is activated.
