The LP3855ESX-ADJ is an adjustable low-voltage linear voltage regulator. It is a member of the LP3805 family and consists of high-accuracy voltage references and an internal high-gain error amplifier, together with a series pass transistor, as well as additional protection and surface-mount-friendly packaging features. As a low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator, the LP385 ESX-ADJ provides up to 150mA of continuous output current over an input range of 2.7V to 6.08V with a maximum dropout of 0.3V at full load. The LP385 ESX-ADJ is able to maintain regulation, which is excellent for Extended Temperature Operation (–40°C to +125°C).

LP3855ESX-ADJ is designed for applications such as DC/DC converters, microprocessors, digital signals, and portable systems. It is also suitable for power supplies for applications requiring ultra-low power such as automotive, cell phones, PDAs, and other handheld systems. Working Principle: The operation of the LP3855ESX-ADJ can be summarized as follows: the input voltage is applied to the voltage regulator, the output voltage is set by two external resistors. The voltage reference varies depending on the input voltage, and it is buffered by the internal error amplifier. The error amplifier amplifies the difference between the reference/feedback voltage and the output voltage. This feedback path is closed to act as a servo-controlled loop to maintain a predetermined output voltage. The pass transistor is actuated by the output of the error amplifier; it is turned on or off depending on the input voltage. This maintains a constant output voltage at a reference voltage, dropout, and current rating.

The LP3855ESX-ADJ requires only two external resistors for the output voltage adjustment. In addition to the adjustable-output feature, the device offers other functions such as shutdown, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, transient protection and over-temperature protection
