Working Principle
A TFT LCD display uses the same principle of operation as a liquid crystal display. An electric field is created by an electric charge across the substrate which causes a change in liquid crystal molecules\' orientation. Then light is either blocked or passed through the liquid crystal in order to control the display brightness. This polarization of light is controlled by a TFT matrix, a thin film transistor-based array on the backplane. These thin-film transistors are semiconductor devices that work like transistors, except that instead of having three terminals, they have only two – gate and drain.
The gate of the TFT transistor acts as a switch to open or close electric current at the source, which charges and discharges a capacitor associated with the drain. This in turn creates an electric field across the Liquid Crystal layer, controlling the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, and therefore the light passing through that particular pixel.
The number of thin-film transistors used to control the display is typically much larger than the number of pixels, with several transistors assigned to each pixel. This technique greatly reduces the electric current at the source, and thus reduces the power consumption of the display by up to a quarter.
