The LT3500HDD#PBF is a component of the Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) Voltage Regulators family, which includes both Linear and Switching regulators. It is an integrated, wide input voltage range linear regulator with power-save and short circuit protection, designed to provide a low-voltage output from an input supplied from the Battery, the Input or Wall Adapter. This PMIC provides power for a variety of applications, such as cordless phones, cellphones and desktop PCs, and has been engineered with a robust design and enhanced features for edge-of-the-art performance.
The LT3500HDD#PBF provides a wide input voltage range of 2.6V to 28V and is capable of up to 3.5A of continuous output current. The device also offers power save, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, thermal-shutdown protection and regulated output voltage. The adjustable output range is between 0.6V to 28V with a ±1% reference accuracy.
The LT3500HDD#PBF is designed with an optimized quiescent current and low sum of total ripple and noise for improved efficiency, thermal performance, and longer battery life. The device features a wide range of transient capability and output voltage slew rate limiting, which reduces dV/dt noise and improves system EMI. Additionally, the device includes cycle-by-cycle over-current protection, hiccup-mode over-current and short-circuit protection, and no-load shutdown.
The LT3500HDD#PBF is designed with a novel architecture, including linear, switching and power-save modes combined in a single package, which provides superior performance, accurate regulation, and low total power dissipation. This device is ideal for portable applications such as PDAs, displays, and battery-powered devices, as it eliminates the need for discrete components and creates a more compact design. It is provided in a 16-pin SOIC package.
In linear mode, the device regulates the output voltage from an internal error amplifier, based on the feedback from the output voltage. The output voltage is compared to an internal bandgap reference. During load transients, the error amplifier increases or decreases the gate voltage of the synchronous switch. When the load current is low, and the output voltage is greater than the setpoint, the device will enter the power-save mode and reduce the output voltage.
In switching mode, the device controls the output voltage using an external P-Channel MOSFET to switch on-and-off to regulate the output voltage. The switching frequency is programmed with an external resistor. During a light load condition, the device will reduce the switching frequency, in order to reduce power dissipation in the switching element. An external compensator capacitor is recommended to ensure stability in the output voltage.
