The LT3791HFE#PBF is a monolithic step-up DC/DC converter specifically designed for driving high-brightness LEDs (HB LED). It operates from a 3V to 5.5V input supply with an adjustable current limit up to 1.5A. This LED driver family features an Internal Switch, linear current regulation and tight LED current matching. With its integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs, it eases PCB layout requirements and also helps reduce external component count while providing high efficiency and low RF noise. The LT3791HFE#PBF is a versatile LED driver capable of driving up to three series-connected LEDs with constant current.
The LT3791HFE#PBF offers high accuracy LED current control (1%), low DCR current sensing, programmable pumping current foldback which minimizes power dissipation at light load, and LED open protection to detect if a LED is a missing, yet keep the LED string lighting. The low profile 3mm x 3mm QFN package makes it a perfect fit for compact and small size applications such as handheld and portable devices in industrial and automotive lighting, lenses, backlighting and automotive Interior LCD displays. Other features include adjustable switching frequency from 500 kHz to 1MHz and run at fixed 1300kHz frequency after setting.
The LT3791HFE#PBF features a current monitoring output pin that indicates the average LED current after synchronization with the internal oscillator. The device utilizes hysteretic architecture to minimize output ripple and produces very low EMI noise. The device has internal under-voltage lockdown (UVLO) protection to ensure the output is shut down in the event of an input supply drop or fault, and includes robust overtemperature protection. Additional protection includes a cycle-by-cycle current limit as well as short-circuit protection and/or a thermal shutdown.
The LT3791HFE#PBF application field includes handheld and portable applications such as selfie sticks, camera LED flashes, LED warning signs, LED smart pens, LED environmental signs and LED nightlight alarm clocks. Additionally, it is suitable for automotive applications such as headlights and signal lighting. The working principle of the LT3791HFE#PBF is based on hysteretic architecture which employs a hysteretic feedback loop between the output driver and regulator. This hysteretic feedback is designed to establish a constant LED current without induce too much noise or ripple.
The LT3791HFE#PBF works by first generating a voltage signal proportional to the current in the external LEDs. This voltage signal is classified to a stable internal reference voltage inside the device. The reference voltage will be compared to an inner hysteresis comparator reference voltage. If the voltage signal is higher then the reference voltage on the hysteresis comparator, the internal MOSFET will be turned on, allowing current to flow through the external LED string. When the voltage signal falls lower than the reference voltage on the comparator, the internal MOSFET will be turned off, thus limiting the current through the external LED string.
