LT3959IUHE#PBF is a highly integrated, high efficiency, step-down switching regulator controller, which is capable of providing outputs from 0.6V to 5V. It includes all the power switches, a current mode, fixed frequency PWM, feedback loop, and embedded protection circuits needed for a switching regulator supply. It controls the, voltage with a versatile fixed frequency, current mode architecture, providing fast transient response and easy compensation, with a powerful gate drive. The switching frequency is fixed at 500kHz and is independent of the compensation circuitry and external components.Its integrated gate driver can operate gate capacitances up to 390nF and is capable of driving MOSFETs in DC and AC switching applications. This makes the LT3959 unparalleled at driving high-efficiency, high-power and high-frequency DC to DC converters. The LT3959IUHE#PBF uses a synchronous rectification technique to deliver current to the load in both directions. It will allow for the design of reverse polarity-protected circuits, with the help of MOSFETs and a reverse polarity protection circuit.

The LT3959IUHE#PBF’s compact size and low quiescent current make it an ideal choice for space constrained, ultra low power applications. With a supply voltage range of 4.5V to 37V, the LT3959IUHE#PBF is capable of delivering an output current up to 10A. It also features advanced protection circuitry with overcurrent, overtemperature, and OCPAU protection, which helps ensure safe and reliable operation. Working Principle

The LT3959IUHE#PBF follows the same basic principles as other switching regulators – it use an inductor to store energy, and convert that energy into useful output power by using an electronic switch. It contains an internal reference, an operational amplifier (OP Amp), a logic voltage level converter (LVLC), and a PWM controller. When the power switch turns on, current flows through the inductor, storing the energy. When the power switch turns off, the inductor discharges the stored energy into the load. The PWM controller senses the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle of the power switch accordingly to maintain a regulated output voltage.

The LT3959IUHE#PBF also includes an external voltage reference, which sets the output voltage. The external voltage reference is compared to a precision internal reference (1.213V) and the difference is the error. The error is amplified by the OP Amp which creates a feedback signal. This feedback signal is compared to the internal PWM ramp signal and an output drive voltage is used to drive the power switch accordingly.

The LT3959IUHE#PBF has an integrated output current sensing circuit which senses the inductor current and provides better current sharing in multi-phase applications. This current sense feature also reduces output voltage ripple. In addition, it has an adjustable burst mode function which can be used to provide low quiescent current operation in light load conditions.
