Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are one of the most important safety devices used to protect sensitive electronic equipment, power lines, communication lines, and people from electric shock caused by large power surges and lightning strikes. The Lake Shore LT600SM is a newly developed metal oxide varistor (MOV), GDT arrestor with high surge capacity. Here, we discuss the application field and working principle of the LT600SM.

The LT600SM is mainly used in surge protection applications that require both heavy and light duty protection. It is suitable for a variety of power transmission, distribution, and industrial equipment applications, including HVAC, medical/instrumentation, pumps, and other electrical equipment. It features a high peak pulse current rating of 8kA, wide operating temperature range of -40 to +135 degrees Celsius and high creepage distance handling capabilities.

The LT600SM GDT arrester has three distinct layers: the ground electrode, the isolating layer, and the zinc oxide varistor (ZOV). When an external electric field is present, a low-voltage charge will enter the GDT through the ground electrode. This charge will create an electric field within the ZOV, causing it to break down and slowly charge the isolating layer between the ZOV and ground electrode. This charge will then be converted to current, which is the basis for the arrester’s operation.

After the current has been generated, the isolating layer prevents the voltage from escaping. The generated current is then directed through the ZOV, where it is rectified and, depending on its magnitude, triggers a spark gap to clamp the voltage. This clamping action will redirect the voltage and flow away from the protected equipment, preventing more dangerous conditions from developing. In addition, the LT600SM is designed with built-in absorption diodes that will allow any excess energy to be safely absorbed.

In any given lightning and surge protection application, the selection of an appropriate metal oxide varistor (MOV) is important in order to ensure that the equipment and other components are safely protected. The LT600SM GDT arrester, with its high surge capacity and wide operating temperature range, is a great option for many types of protection applications. Its compact design, rated voltage of 4kV, and fire-safe construction make it an ideal choice for various industrial applications.
