LT8471IFE#PBF Application Field and Working Principle

LT8471IFE#PBF is a DC DC switching regulator controller with integrated FETs that enables the design of non-isolated, adaptive, high current power supplies with a great deal of flexibility. It is designed to make the design process simpler and faster when constructing low-cost, high power density DC to DC converters capable of delivering up to 8A output. This type of DC to DC converter is suitable for a variety of applications such as an automotive voltage regulator, DC to DC batteries charger, power tools, and general-purpose low-voltage regulation.

The LT8471IFE#PBF includes two integrated power FETs and a current sense amplifier that are configured to provide an insulated floating output voltage. These features of the LT8471IFE#PBF provide functionality that would otherwise require the use of an external PWM controller, discrete FETs and a current sensing circuit. Furthermore, the adjustable current limit of the device ensures a stable operation with a wide range of load conditions as well as a variety of input supply voltages. In addition, the integrated integrated power FETs allow for enable/disable and remote voltage sensing.

The switching frequency of the LT8471IFE#PBF is adjustable via a single resistor, adjustable to 500kHz as a maximum value. The built-in current sense amplifier allows for an adjustable foldback current limit feature that limits the output current when a current limit is detected. The device also features a range of protections such as overcurrent protection, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage protection, power good and thermal shutdown.

The operation of the LT8471IFE#PBF is synchronous rectified fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching topology. The enable or disable function is provided by pulling the enable pin to ground or floating it respectively. Once enabled, the output voltage is regulated with pulse-width modulation of the gate drive signals to the integrated power FETs. Internal voltage feedback loops regulating the peak and average current levels will adjust the PWM cycle width to keep the output voltage constant.
