The LTC1664IGN#PBF is a current output Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). It belongs to a family of Data Acquisition devices dedicated for Digital-to-Analog (D/A) conversion of collected data gathered from analog sensing of many kinds. The device uses the 16-bit serial input data format for a ±10V current output providing a higher accuracy than many other DAC products.

The LTC1664IGN#PBF is versatile, offering a wide range of resolutions from 8-bit to 16-bit with options of voltage or current outputs. It is exceptionally accurate with versatility of being used with a single linearized current or an adjustable output through scaling and offset. The output drive capacity of the DAC scales with the value of the binary input making it ideal for high voltage/high current applications.

Data in the LTC1664IGN#PBF is presented in two-wire, serial interface format and all instructions are written using 16-bit words which are loaded via the serial port using the MSB (most significant bit) first. The two user-programmable output ranges, 0 to 10 V and 0 to 20mA, can be configured for voltage output and current output respectively. Its basic operating range is 0 to 10 V and its adjustable operating range is 0 to 10 V with a linearization of ±1.5% full-scale accuracy and 0 to 20mA with an adjustable range of 0 to 40mA and a linearization of ≤ ±1%.

When the LTC1664IGN#PBF is used as a D/A converter, the chip performs a “voltage-to-current” conversion. The data is clocked in and the DAC sets the corresponding current through the programmable resistor Rprogram. This current changes the voltage on the resistor and the DAC adjusts the voltage in proportion. By using the scaling factor, it is possible to accurately and precisely control the voltage and current output.

The DAC features a programmable reference pin which, when connected to the positive power supply, will set up the output voltage reference max. The reference voltage is used to determine the output voltage or current of the DAC, which is defined by the scaling factor. The reference voltage can be externally biased to customize the output, which can be either higher or lower than the rated output. The reference voltage should be properly adjusted for any scaling, offset, and gain settings.
