Working Principle

The LTC2320HUKG-14#TRPBF works by converting an input analog signal into a stream of digital binary numbers. It does this by making use of the SAR (successive approximation register) architecture, which creates a digital output out of an internal digital comparator. A capacitor is supplied with a semi-periodic square wave clock signal to charge until the voltage equals that of the input signal. The analog data is then gradually approximated until the digital output converges to the desired voltage value.

The LTC2320HUKG-14#TRPBF features an on-chip p-type MOS transistor for charge-driven conversion and a sample-and-hold (S/H) capacitor. The S/H charged until the clock signal is low then the S/H signal is connected to the on-chip comparator. The comparator then starts the comparator’s conversion process, which consists of a number of “rounds”. During each round, the SAR makes a detection and determines if the input signal is higher or lower than the most recently converted digital output. Once the SAR has gone through each round, the conversion is complete and the resulting digital data is outputted to the user.
