Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)

An analog to digital converter (ADC) is an electronic device used to convert an analog signal into digital data. It is often used to process and measure data from sources such as sound, light, temperature, or pressure. The LTC2421IMS#PBF is an example of an ADC that is part of the Linear Technology’s family of data acquisition (DAQ) products.The LTC2421IMS#PBF is a low-power, 24-bit, high-resolution delta-sigma ADC with an integrated oscillator and temperature sensor. It features an integrated temperature sensor, an adjustable gain analog front end, and a built-in low-pass filter for noise reduction. It allows for a wide range of input voltage ranges up to +4.096V for unipolar and -4.096 to +4.096V for bipolar ranges. The device features programmable low-power sleep mode and power-down mode that allows for ultra-low standby and off-line operation.The LTC2421IMS#PBF includes what is known as a “timer-triggered” architecture for sampling input signals. This architecture is designed to ensure continuous, uninterrupted digitization of low-frequency signals without any analogue input hysteresis or drift. The sample and hold function is driven using an externally provided, adjustable-frequency clock. This clock can be adjusted to accommodate the desired sample rate or operating temperature range.The LTC2421IMS#PBF can be used in a variety of applications ranging from industrial process control, acoustic monitoring, and security systems to medical patient monitor applications. Its single-chip solution makes it ideal for low-power, cost effective, standalone operation. The device is also suitable for the development of embedded systems, as a module, or as a platform-based solution. This provides a great deal of flexibility in the design and deployment of high performance data acquisition systems.In addition to its excellent low-frequency performance, the LTC2421IMS#PBF also features a wide array of protection features such as ESD and overvoltage protection, temperature and process monitoring, output remote sensing, and software calibration. It is built with a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) interface, which allows it to be connected to a variety of digital logic circuits.In summary, the LTC2421IMS#PBF is an example of a high-performance, low-power data acquisition (DAQ) device that is used in a wide range of applications.
