Working Principle of LTC3118IUFD#TRPBF

The LTC3118IUFD#TRPBF operates in a buck / boost mode which allows for both step-down and step-up conversion of incoming DC voltage. In buck mode the incoming supply voltage is stepped down to reach the regulated output voltage. The power MOSFET inside the device is toggled between the “on” and “off” state at high frequency (typically switching at 1.2GHz). When the MOSFET is “on”, the input voltage is connected across the inductor and the output is connected to the cap across the inductor.

When the MOSFET is “off”, the stored energy in the inductor flows back through the MOSFET node to maintain the set output voltage. The duty cycle of the switch is controlled by a voltage mode or current mode PWM controller based on the feedback voltage. The input voltage can also be regulated by setting the feedback voltage at the V_ctrl pin to correspond to the desired output voltage.

The LTC3118IUFD#TRPBF has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Additional features like thermal shutdown, overvoltage protection and current limiting protect the device from being damaged due to voltage or temperature extremes.
