IntroductionThe LTC3220EPF-1#PBF is a low voltage, constant current driver designed to power very low voltage LEDs with currents of up to 500mA. This integrated circuit provides flexibility in many applications such as automotive head-, tail- and fog-lamps, as well as architectural and landscape lighting products. The device can also be used for lighting products where the LED is driven directly from an AC mains supply.PMIC LED DriversPower management integrated circuits (PMICs) are semiconductor components used to monitor and control the voltage, current, and temperature of critical components in a system. The most commonly used type of PMICs are LED drivers, which provide a regulated current to power LEDs. LED drivers contain a programmable output stage (for dimming, pulse-width modulation, or synchronized switching), an enable input stage, over-temperature protection and thermal management features, etc. LTC3220EPF-1#PBF Application Field and Working PrincipleThe LTC3220EPF-1#PBF LED driver is an ultra-low power, highly configurable constant current LED driver designed for operating and driving single LEDs with very low forward voltages. This LED driver operates directly from a wide input voltage range of 3V to 15V (nominal). The device has an adjustable output current range of 50mA to 500mA and utilizes a constant current circuit with internal soft start to limit in-rush current when the system is powered up. The output current of the LTC3220EPF-1#PBF device is adjusted via an external current-setting resistor and can be monitored with an external current-sense resistor. The device is designed with thermal management algorithms that shut off the output when the junction temperature exceeds its operating range, protecting the IC and the LED from thermal runaway or destruction. The device also has an adjustable Soft-Lock feature that allows the user to configure an end of life state. When Soft-Lock is enabled, the output will be switched off when a specific current reaches the LED. This capability allows the user to set a predetermined output current and end of life state for the device, ensuring the LED has met its necessary compliance and reliability requirements without having to monitor the device for start-up and operations. In addition, the device provides flexible dimming options, including I2C and PWM dimming, enabling the user to adjust the LED brightness over a wide range. |Additionally, the device has a constant-current output, eliminating the need for a separate current-sense resistor and allowing the user to quickly and easily adjust the LED\'s current.
