The LTC3255MPMSE#TRPBF is an external parts type DC-DC switching regulator designed for use in Low-Voltage Input/High-Voltage Output applications. It is a step-up switching regulator that can provide up to 5-A average output current with the output voltage adjustable from 1.2 to 10 V. The device is packaged in a 4×4 mm QFN package and is suitable for applications where board space is constrained.The LTC3255MPMSE#TRPBF is a fixed frequency, current mode regulator that operates at a switching frequency of 250 kHz. Its switching frequency can be reduced externally to 150 kHz, thereby allowing for a low EMI solution. This device comes with a wide input voltage range (2.25 V) and the ability to start-up from input voltages below 0.5 V.The primary application for the LTC3255MPMSE#TRPBF is powering audio amplifiers from single-cell sources, such as USB, battery powered systems, and PoE sources. It can also be used in embedded modules, such as portable scanners, Bluetooth earpieces, and medical devices. Its wide input voltage range and low quiescent current make it an ideal solution for low-voltage input applications.The LTC3255MPMSE#TRPBF works on the principle of switched mode power supply (SMPS) with a hysteretic control. It consists of an internal power switch, Feedback/Control circuit, and an input bypass capacitor. The switch is controlled by the voltage across the sense resistor, which is adjusted to maintain a constant output voltage. The output voltage is set by connecting an external resistor from the RT pin to Ground.The output of the switch is rectified by the output capacitor and filtered by the output coil. The average output current is limited by the output capacitor and the current trip point of the switching regulator. The maximum output current is limited by the maximum duty cycle of the control circuit. The internal switch has a low on-resistance and high efficiency, which further enhances the efficiency of the device even at full load.The LTC3255MPMSE#TRPBF also includes input and output under-voltage protection, as well as thermal shutdown protection. The device includes an integrated soft-start feature to limit inrush current during startup.
