LTC3638EMSE#TRPBF is a 2-cell Li-Ion or 2-cell Li-Polymer battery powered synchronous buck DC/DC converter that is capable of delivering up to 10 A continuous output current over a wide input voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V. Low operating quiescent current of only 200 μA makes it ideal for battery-powered applications. The LTC3638EMSE#TRPBF is optimized for portable applications where both efficiency and size are critical. As such, it integrates all necessary features, including soft-start, internal compensation, and adjustable switching frequency. It is available in space-saving 10-lead, 3 mm × 4 mm DFN and 10-pad MSOP packages.
The LTC3638EMSE#TRPBF is suitable for powering microprocessors, memories, DSPs, ASICs, FPGAs, or any other low voltage IC for a wide variety of applications. It is also capable of providing power for GaAs or GaN power devices. The wide input voltage range, high switching frequency, and high efficiency make it ideal for powering low voltage electronics from a single cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer battery, a linear regulator, or a wide DC input range. In addition, its shutdown current is low enough to extend battery life in portable applications.
The operating principle of the LTC3638EMSE#TRPBF is simple: it uses an internal high-side (HS) and low-side (LS) power MOSFET pair to regulate the output voltage. It works by varying the duty cycle of these MOSFETs, while keeping the output voltage at its desired level. As the power MOSFETs switch on and off, energy is stored in the output inductor, and is then delivered to the load. This is done by controlling the duty cycle and frequency of the HS and LS synchronous MOSFETs. When the inductor stores a charge, current flows through the fuse and load, when it discharges current flows through the HS and LS MOSFETs and the load.
