LTC3815EUFE#PBF is a versatile synchronous buck regulator and popular member of low power DC/DC switching converters. It is a PMIC (Power Management IC) component with the Voltage Regulators type being DC DC Switching Regulators. The component mainly reduces voltage from 5V to lower voltage, for example 3.3V, and it is frequently used in hand-held applications such as cell phones and PDAs that need a small and lightweight power source, and to provide regulated power to a wide range of applications.

The component is of a non-isolated synchronous buck DC/DC switch mode regulator and needs at least 4 external components to perform the dc to dc conversion. This component is able to provide up to 3A output current, with input voltage ranges between 4 volts and 6.5V. The buck converter output can be varied by selecting different external components. The LTC3815EUFE#PBF can also adapt to output voltages as low as 0.6 volts and as high as 6V.

The working principle of the component is very simple which primarily uses a switching element which is in this case an N-channel MOSFET, inductors and capacitors. The switch is normally operated at 1/2 of the input supply voltage, VIN and the output voltage is regulated by controlling the duty cycle and PFM mode of the switch when the output load increases or decreases. In normal operating conditions, the MOSFET will turn on and allow current flow through the inductor connected to VIN when the low side sense terminal (VIM) is low. When the MOSFET is on, energy is stored in the inductor until the MOSFET turns off.

On the other side, when the MOSFET is off, current flows from the output capacitor and provides the output voltage, VOUT. The output voltage value is stable as long as the current through the inductor is constant, and this can be achieved by adjusting the duty cycle of the switch with an external resistor and capacitor. When the output load is increased, the duty cycle is increased by reducing the frequency of the switching cycle and the MOSFET is turned off sooner with the result that more current is diverted to the output.

The LTC3815EUFE#PBF also includes other features such as cycle-by-cycle current limit, output over current and over voltage protection. It also features an enable pin input and fixed 500kHz operation, reducing the control loop noise over the traditional PWM supply schemes to enable the design of a compact and efficient power supply.
