LTC3838IUHF-1#TRPBF is a high performance synchronous step-down current mode DC/DC controller IC for voltage regulation applications. This device includes a fixed frequency current mode step-down/step-up controller optimized for generating either positive or negative output voltages from an input voltage of either positive or negative polarity. The device’s integrated True-RMS current sensing circuitry and internal power switches minimize the external component count, while providing a high efficiency DC/DC converter solution.

Application Field

The LTC3838IUHF-1#TRPBF is ideally suited for buck, boost, and SEPIC (Single-Ended Primary Inductance Converter) applications to generate either a positive or negative output voltage from an input voltage of either positive or negative polarity. It can also function as a variable dropout linear regulator, as an ideal diode controller, or as a pulse-width modulated current regulator. Typical applications include servers, routers and switches, notebooks, LED lighting, gaming systems, entertainment systems and other consumer electronics.

Working Principle

The LTC3838IUHF-1#TRPBF features both step-down and step-up operation. In step-down operation, an internal low voltage FET switch, in conjunction with an external inductor of suitable current rating and size, is used to convert the input voltage to the desired output voltage. An internal high voltage FET switch is used to regulate the output voltage within specified limits. In step-up operation, the same low voltage FET switch is used to induce a positive voltage across the inductor, which is then passed through the control circuit and regulated by the high voltage switch.

The LTC3838IUHF-1#TRPBF also includes a True-RMS current sensing circuit for improved efficiency, as well as numerous other high performance features. It contains a PLL-controlled oscillator to provide precise switch timing, adjustable synchronization and frequency dithering, and a fast transient response. It also features programmable soft-start, adjustable soft-stop, and on-the-fly cycle-by-cycle peak current and voltage limit adjustment. The device also has an integrated pre-biased start-up/shutdown control, under-voltage lockout control, and an Soft-Off control.

The LTC3838IUHF-1#TRPBF is available in the space-saving Lead-free and RoHS-compliant 8-lead VDFN package and is characterized for operation over the temperature range of -40 to 125ºC.
