LTC3856EFE Application Field and Working Principle

The LTC3856EFE is a PolyPhase synchronous switching regulator controller from Linear Technology Corporation. This device enables designers to conveniently implement high efficiency and low ripple PolyPhase DC/DC switching regulator systems. With the aid of external MOSFETs, inductors, and capacitors, the device can achieve highly efficient operation with fast transient response and low EMI noise. Thanks to its high integration, it allows the designer to implement complex power regulation protocols in a small area with minimal effort.

Application Fields

The LTC3856EFE is ideal for applications such as servers, telecom systems, FPGA and ASIC power supply, computer systems, disk drives, and general-purpose power conversion, etc. It is capable of delivering high current with voltage output ranging from 0.9V to 5V and phase current up to 40A. Thanks to its very low quiescent current dissipation, this device can be used in power restricted systems without any issue.

Working Principle

At its most basic level, the LTC3856EFE works by pulse-width modulating the current through synchronous MOSFETs. The current is then converted into a stable DC voltage through the use of an external inductor. The device features a constant frequency of operation, which allows the designer to easily optimize the EMI profile of the converter. In order to optimize the efficiency of the system, the current of the phase are combined and doubled, thus reducing the system losses.

In order to reduce the EMI noise and to significantly improve the transient response of the converter, the device implements unique algorithms such as Peak-Current-Mode (PCM) control, Balanced-Current-Mode (BCM) control, and Shared-Current-Mode (SCM) control. The device is also capable of running in discontinuous mode (DCM) in light load conditions in order to optimize efficiency.

Additionally, the device features soft-start and DC bus precharge, as well as several protection features such as overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent protection. By utilizing these features, designers are able to create complex and reliable switching regulation systems in a relatively short amount of time.
