Introduction
The LTC3859AEFE is a high-performance monolithic synchronous buck switching voltage regulator controller. Employing an innovative current-mode architecture and extensive performance-enhancing features such as line-voltage feed forward, remote sensing and a wide range of output voltage accuracy options, the LTC3859AEFE is an ideal choice for many power-conversion applications. It is packaged in an industry-standard 6-pin SOT-23 package to keep the cost competitive. This device is rated for an input voltage range of 2.25 V to 6 V and is capable of delivering up to 1.5 A of output current in its standard configuration.
Application Field
As a DC-DC switching voltage regulator, the LTC3859AEFE is typically used in portable devices such as cellular phones, handheld computers,digital cameras, etc. It is especially useful for applications involving battery operated and mains-powered systems, where it can efficiently convert the input mains voltage into a suitable output voltage. The device is also very useful in industrial control applications such as motor speed control, LED lighting control, and other applications where a compact and efficient DC-DC switching regulator is needed.
Working Principle
The LTC3859AEFE uses current mode control, which employs an on-chip N-channel MOSFET as a main switch. The controller also incorporates a voltage feedback loop, which is used to compare the output voltage with a reference voltage and adjust the controlling parameters to keep the output voltage constant. When the input voltage is first applied to the device, a soft start circuit will gradually increase the output voltage level up to the specified level. Then the voltage feedback loop will take over and adjust the output voltage based on the reference voltage. The output voltage accuracy can be adjusted by selecting an appropriate reference voltage with an external resistor divider. The circuit also features a frequency compensation pin to adjust the loop response, allowing the user to customize the loop response and optimize the performance of the regulator.The device also incorporates an on-chip oscillator and current-sensing circuitry to achieve excellent switching performance while minimizing component count. In addition, the LTC3859AEFE has integrated protection features such as Over-Current Protection (OCP) and Over-Voltage Protection (OVP).
