The LTC3862EFE is a high performance, high efficiency and high voltage synchronous step-down DC/DC switching controller and is the latest addition to Linear Technology Corporation’s family of low power, feature-packed DC/DC controllers. It is designed to generate a 2 A, high efficiency, dual synchronous rectified output, using current mode with external components and on-chip synchronous rectification. It supports a wide input voltage range of 4V to 12V and is capable of providing a regulated programmable output voltage as low as 0.75 V while consuming only 1 μA of quiescent current.

The LTC3862EFE offers two different group of features, namely, unique and sophisticated input and output control and protection features. The unique input control and protection features keep the LTC3862EFE protected from both the input overvoltage and under-voltage. On the other hand, the sophisticated and advanced output control and protection features ensure that the device is well protected from any kind of overload, short circuit and over-temperature conditions.

The LTC3862EFE also incorporates capabilities of a high voltage buck regulator and a low dropout regulator. The buck regulator is designed to accept a wide input voltage of 4V–12V, while the low dropout regulator accepts a wide input voltage range of 3V–20V, with an output voltage range extending up to 20V. This enables the LTC3862EFE to support both high voltage and low voltage applications, thus providing significant flexibility in system design.

The LTC3862EFE can work in either buck or Low Dropout (LDO) mode. The buck regulator mode is ideal for applications requiring fast transient response and low output ripple. In the LDO mode, the LTC3862EFE can control the minimum output voltage, ensuring that the output remains within the specified regulation range. This feature is particularly useful for precision output applications such as digital and analog circuit protection.

When operating in buck regulator mode, the LTC3862EFE works on the principle of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). It uses a fixed frequency internal oscillator and two separate control loops for both currents and outputs, coupled with an inbuilt synchronous rectifier for improved efficiency. The amount of power transferred from the input to output is determined by the input voltage and output current. The higher the current, the more the power is transferred.

When in the LDO mode, the LTC3862EFE utilizes a feed forward error correction loop, which ensures that the output remains within the specified limits. The LTC3862EFE provides low dropout performance in both modes and also features a 0.8V start up voltage. It also features thermal shutdown, over temperature protection and under voltage lockout. It has a maximum operating frequency of 2MHz and a wide temperature range of -40°C to +150°C.

The LTC3862EFE is ideal for a variety of power management applications including high performance, high power data converters, digital audio and video, telecommunication, industrial and medical applications. Its light weight and low power consumption makes it a suitable solution for battery powered applications.
