Working Principle

The device regulates an output voltage through the use of PWM control loop. Its operating principle is based on its four internal power MOSFETs and associated control circuitry. The output voltage is regulated by a voltage feedback loop, the input voltage is always compared with the output voltage.

The input voltage is compared to a reference voltage. The feedback loop adjusts the duty cycle of the switching MOSFETs to produce the requested output voltage. When the output voltage starts to drop, the controller increases the duty cycle, thus increasing the current flow to the output and providing the required load current. When the output voltage reaches the reference voltage, the switching frequency is lowered to maintain the output voltage and current at the requested level.

The device has current limit protection, temperature shutdown protection and overvoltage protection to provide utmost safety and reliability. The current limit is invoked during overload, overheat and short circuit conditions. A thermal shutdown circuit is automatically activated on over-temperature conditions. All the power transistors are in shutdown mode when they are not used.

The LTM8054IY#PBF is equipped with Burst Mode operation, reducing the quiescent current thereby extending the battery life. The Burst Mode works by cycling through intervals between continuous Mode and Shut Down Mode.
