The core of the system is the small-signal controller, which provides all the necessary control signals for the P and N-channel power switches, as well as providing the voltage error signal for controlling the output voltage.When the small-signal controller receives the input voltage, it applies a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal to the P and N-channel power switches, which causes them to turn on for a certain time proportional to a set duty cycle. The switches will then conduct currents for that duration of time. The current sense resistor converts the average inductor current into a voltage, which is then fed into the small-signal controller to be used as a feedback signal for the output voltage regulation.At the same time, the inductor stores energy in the form of a magnetic field, while the output capacitor smooths out the output voltage ripple to ensure a steady current flow. The output diode prevents the inductor from discharging through the controller while the switch is off. The LTM8055IY allows designers to configure the output of the regulator according to their application’s needs.
