PTC Resettable Fuses, or Positive Temperature Coefficient Resettable Fuses, are an increasingly popular technology for mitigating electrical current surges and protecting electrical circuits from damage. One of the most popular PTC Resettable Fuses is the LTP340F. LTP340F Working Principle

The PTC Resettable Fuse contains an electrically conductive polymer, which is temperature-sensitive. When the current passes through the polymer layer, it causes the temperature to rise, and when it reaches a certain level the polymer will expand, thus limiting the passage of current. When the current level drops, the temperature decreases and the polymer layer contracts, allowing the current to resume its normal level.

The LTP340F is designed to detect and limit any current that passes through at a level higher than the rated maximum current. The LTP340F is not designed to protect against direct short circuiting or an extreme surge in current that would cause a sharp spike in voltage. In these cases, an alternate form of surge protection, such as an over-voltage protection device, should be used in conjunction with the LTP340F.
