Working Principle
Put in the strictest terms, the working principle of a medium voltage inverter (MVI) is a power conversion equipment that uses high-frequency ac to dc, and then converts it to the desired ac waveform – and harmonic contents – to give the device flexibility in Power conditioning. The MVI further reduces the voltage by means of an autotransformer.
In general, the working process of the inverter can be split into three basic segments: voltage recovery, power modulation and current conditioning. First, the voltage is “recovered” and directed into the converter the power stage via the autotransformer. In the power modules, pulse width modulation with reduced power is employed to convert the voltage into direct current. Each module allows for the balancing of power between the modules of the inverter. Finally, current conditioning is achieved through a special filter. This filter is configured to get rid of any undesired currents or harmonics, helping to optimize current distortion in applications requiring a smoother power delivery, such as in industrial power systems.
