M-485 is an industrial communication fieldbus technology based on the RS-485 interface. It was developed by the European-based Bus User Group (BUG) to meet the data communication needs of automation technicians in the process and factory control environment. M-485 is designed to provide a cost-effective and reliable data communication method for distributed control systems, motion control systems, digital sensors, and intelligent field devices. In order to address the different requirements of a variety of industries, M-485 has evolved from its original 4 pairs of twisted wire system to the current multi-mode 3–2 wire system.

M-485 is an international standard for fieldbus communication, defined by IEC 61158. The main advantage of M-485 is that it is a multi-drop communication system which allows multiple devices to be connected to one line. This is achieved by using Differential Signaling techniques, which reduce interference and cross-talk from the environment, thus enabling higher quality, reliable and secure communications.

On the physical level, M-485 typically uses the RS-485 electrical interface. This is a multi-level, full-duplex, serial data bus, which can be configured to support one or two-wire systems. The data on the RS-485 bus is in asynchronous, 12-bit word format, with the most significant bit (MSB) at the beginning of each word. The RS-485 bus can support data transmission rates of up to 10 Mb/s with a maximum cable length of 1000 meters.

On the data-link layer, M-485 has many distinguishing features. For instance, it can detect remote access requests and prevent data overruns. It can self-identify corrupted data frames and reject them or request retransmission. Furthermore, it has the ability to identify and distinguish various types of fieldbus device, such as master, multi-master, slave, and independent devices, and not allow inter-device communication until all devices have detected each other.

On the application layer, M-485 provides a variety of features to support automation applications. These include support for standard communication functions, such as time synchronization, event-driven communication, and configuration management. It also supports media-independent messaging services, such as error control, flow control, and message retransmission. Additionally, M-485 supports non-standard services such as process control, time critical cyclical data, and communication interruption.

The M-485 communication fieldbus is increasingly being chosen for use in industrial automation, process and factory control, and distributed control systems. Its low cost, reliable communication, and high degree of integration make it an attractive choice for manufacturers. With the continued advancement of technology, M-485\'s popularity is expected to grow in the years ahead.
