The M0510-2R5204-R is an example of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC). Also known as a supercapacitor, EDLCs are parts of a larger family of components called capacitors, which store electrical energy in an electric field. Described as "the battery of the future", EDLCs are quickly becoming the preferred choice for specific applications.EDLCs differ from traditional capacitors in a number of ways, namely by their ability to store a large amount of energy. Whereas traditional capacitors store energy by creating an electric field between two metal plates, EDLCs use a combination of electrochemical and physical properties to store energy. This allows for EDLCs to have a much higher specific energy density than traditional capacitors - up to 10,000 times greater in fact.The M0510-2R5204-R, like all EDLCs, consists of two electrodes which are further divided into two layers. One of the layers is a thin, porous material which acts as a substrate for storing charge. The other electrode, which is embedded in the opposite side of the two layers, is composed of an electrolyte. Both electrodes are then entrapped between two porous layers of dielectric material which act as a separator. When the EDLC is charged, an electric double layer is formed across the two layers. This creates a highly charge-selective barrier that is capable of allowing ionic flows while blocking the majority of other components.Through this electric double layer, EDLCs are able to simultaneously store and release large amounts of energy in a very short time period. This makes them ideal for applications that require quick bursts of energy, such as backup power supplies, automotive and automotive accessories, power tools, and other high-power applications. The M0510-2R5204-R is specifically designed for high-power applications, with a maximum working voltage of 5V.These EDLCs are also highly efficient. At up to 95% efficiency, they require far less energy to do the same amount of work as traditional capacitors, making them more cost and energy efficient.
