Anode and cathode formed on the tantalum metal anode interact with each other and create a capacitance component in either AC or DC applications. In the M39003/01-2242 series, the capacitance of these capacitors can range from 0.22µF to 100µF and their maximum voltage can range from 4 to 100 volts.

When a voltage is applied between the electrodes of a tantalum capacitor, an electric field is created in the electrolyte. This electric field causes an anion to move from the nearby porous anode region to the adjacent dielectric. As the anion moves into the dielectric, its diameter increases creating a “trap”. The result is a capacitance that is proportional to the size of the trap and the surface area of the dielectric. When current is drawn through the capacitor, the anion is removed from the trap and the capacitance decreases.
